Nash County, NC (May 18, 2025) – A crash involving two tractor-trailers early Sunday morning on Interstate 95 in Nash County left multiple people hospitalized and shut down southbound traffic for hours.
Incident Details: According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. near mile marker 143.5, just south of the NC 4 Exit. A Volvo truck driven by Marlon Patterson of Sandy Springs, Georgia, failed to reduce speed and rear-ended a Mack truck driven by 52-year-old Artinus Shands of Windsor Mill, Maryland. Patterson’s vehicle jack-knifed and the cab detached from the trailer, blocking both lanes. Shands, his wife, and their 3-year-old child were transported to UNC Nash Hospital as a precaution. Patterson was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Patterson has been charged with failure to reduce speed, driving while license revoked, and failure to wear a seatbelt. Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the collision, including potential negligence related to vehicle maintenance or driver fatigue. The incident underscores the dangers of highway travel involving heavy trucks and the importance of compliance with safety regulations.
Our thoughts are with the Shands family and all those affected by this incident.
