Barstow, CA (January 17, 2026) – Anthony Jackson, 35, was killed after being struck by a big rig truck along Highway 247 near Barstow on Saturday.
Incident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), around 1:45 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, a collision occurred on the northbound side of Highway 247 near Nandin Road, just south of Barstow.
A Mack Anthem truck hauling a dry bulk tank trailer was traveling north on the roadway. The Mack Anthem truck struck the pedestrian, Jackson. Jackson was badly injured. Paramedics transported him to the local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The reason and circumstances leading up to the truck hitting Jackson remain under investigation.
Investigation: The CHP continues to investigate the crash on northbound Highway 247 near Nandin Road that killed pedestrian Anthony Jackson. Because the circumstances leading up to the impact have not yet been released, investigators will likely focus on determining why Jackson was in or near the roadway and what the Mack Anthem truck driver could see in the moments before the collision.
The CHP is expected to review physical evidence from the scene, the truck’s point of impact, debris patterns, and any available witness statements or video footage to establish a timeline. Investigators may also examine whether speed, lighting conditions, driver attentiveness, or mechanical issues played a role.
Legal Considerations: When a pedestrian is struck by a commercial truck, liability depends heavily on what the investigation shows about the driver’s actions and whether the pedestrian was in a location where the driver had time and space to react.
If evidence indicates the truck driver failed to use reasonable care, such as by failing to maintain a proper lookout or to adjust for roadway conditions, civil liability may apply.
Because this crash involved a big rig, investigators may also examine commercial trucking factors, including the driver’s training, hours-of-service compliance, and whether the truck was being operated safely for the conditions. In some cases, liability may extend beyond the driver to a trucking company or other responsible parties if unsafe practices, poor maintenance, or policy violations contributed to the collision.
For Jackson’s loved ones, a wrongful death claim may help surviving family members pursue compensation for funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, and the loss of companionship and care caused by this tragic incident.
My thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Anthony Jackson as they grieve this heartbreaking loss.
