Petaluma, CA (April 16, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle collision last week on Lakeville Highway has claimed the life of a young man from Rohnert Park, identified by the Sonoma County Coroner as 22-year-old Angel Avalos.
Incident Overview: According to authorities, the accident occurred around 2:20 p.m. on April 16, southeast of Petaluma. Avalos was driving a Toyota Camry northbound on Lakeville Highway when he swerved to avoid stopped traffic just south of Old Lakeville Road No. 3. In the process, his vehicle collided with the rear of a Nissan Versa, subsequently overturned into the southbound lane, and was hit by an oncoming Chevrolet Silverado. The impact of the collision pushed the Nissan into the back of a Ford Fusion. Four occupants of the Nissan were transported to Petaluma Valley Hospital with minor injuries. Avalos was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation and Legal Implications: This tragic event underscores the potential dangers on busy highways, especially when sudden traffic stops force abrupt maneuvers. The investigation will likely explore factors such as road conditions, vehicle speeds, and driver attentiveness at the time of the crash. Depending on these findings, the family of Avalos could decide to pursue a wrongful death claim. The other victims may also be able to file a personal injury claim. Ultimately, it comes down to the distribution of negligence in this accident and the specific circumstances leading up to the collision.
My deepest sympathies go out to the family and friends of Angel Avalos during this difficult time. I also wish the other victims a speedy recovery from their injuries.
