Pedestrian Brenda Sarabio in Critical Condition After Collision with Police Vehicle in Calistoga

Calistoga, CA (July 29, 2024) – A serious vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash occurred at the intersection of Berry and Washington streets in Calistoga on Monday evening. The incident involved a Calistoga Police Department patrol vehicle driven by CPD Sgt. Kristine Norton and 22-year-old Brenda Sarabio.

Accident Details: Brenda Sarabio was walking in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by the patrol vehicle as Sgt. Norton made a left turn from Washington onto Berry. Sarabio sustained major injuries and was immediately transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where she remains in critical condition as of Wednesday.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination.

Sgt. Norton had a duty to exercise reasonable care while driving, especially in a residential area with pedestrians. The fact that the collision occurred in a marked crosswalk is particularly concerning, as drivers are expected to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks. The specifics of the officer’s visibility, speed, and adherence to traffic laws will be crucial in determining whether there was a breach of this duty.

If negligence is found, Sarabio may be able to file a personal injury claim against Sgt. Norton.

I wish Brenda Sarabio a fast recovery. My sincerest thoughts are with her and her family during this difficult time.
