Yermo, CA (June 5, 2024) – On June 5, 2024, Steven D. Snider, 55, of Manistee, Michigan, was tragically killed in a chain-reaction collision involving three big rigs on the southbound 15 Freeway near Yermo, California.
Accident Details: Snider was driving a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck towing a U-Haul trailer when he came to a stop due to traffic. A 2016 Freightliner big rig, driven by a 77-year-old man from Orange, failed to stop in time and rear-ended the U-Haul trailer and Snider’s pickup truck. The impact of the collision pushed Snider’s vehicle into a Volvo big rig stopped in front of him, which was then forced into the rear of a Kenworth big rig, also halted due to traffic. Sadly, paramedics pronounced Snider dead at the scene. The driver of the Freightliner sustained minor injuries, while the drivers of the other two big rigs were unharmed.
Investigation: The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is investigating the cause of the accident. They do not suspect DUI to have played a role. Officials urge anyone with information to contact the CHP’s Barstow Office at 760-255-5900. As a personal injury attorney, several factors in this case warrant attention.
Speed and Attention of the Freightliner Driver: One of the key aspects of this case is understanding why the driver of the Freightliner failed to stop. Despite the CHP initially ruling out intoxicated driving, other factors like driver fatigue or distraction could have played a role. Investigating the driver’s logbook, cellphone records, and vehicle’s electronic data recorder (EDR) could provide vital insights. Or, the vehicle may have malfunctioned. A thorough inspection of the truck’s maintenance records and a detailed mechanical examination are necessary to rule out any equipment failures.
Traffic Conditions and Road Design: It is essential to understand the traffic conditions and road design at the time of the accident. Was there any construction, poor signage, or other road conditions that could have contributed to the crash? Gathering data from traffic cameras and witness statements can help piece together the events leading up to the collision.
Negligence and Liability: Determining liability in multi-vehicle collisions can be complex. The investigation must consider the role of each driver and whether there were any contributory actions from the other big rigs involved. Additionally, the responsibility of the trucking companies for their drivers’ actions and the condition of their vehicles must be evaluated. If negligence played a role in the crash, Snider’s family may be able to file a wrongful death claim to recover compensation, such as funeral expenses and loss of financial support.
My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Steven D. Snider during this incredibly difficult time.
