Sacramento, CA (May 19, 2024) – A tragic incident occurred early Sunday morning on a Sacramento freeway where a pedestrian was fatally struck by a vehicle. The California Highway Patrol confirmed that the accident happened at about 12:40 a.m. on the northbound Interstate 5 on-ramp to the Highway 50 portion of the Capital City Freeway in Upper Land Park.
Incident Overview: Officer Mark Leavitt, a spokesman for the CHP’s South Sacramento office, reported that upon arrival, officers found 22-year-old Ayanna Akilah Thomas critically injured after being hit by a white Toyota traveling approximately 65 mph. Despite immediate responses, Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene by Sacramento Fire Department personnel. The driver of the Toyota, an adult female, stated that Thomas appeared suddenly in front of her vehicle and she was unable to stop in time. The impact occurred with the Toyota’s left bumper, windshield, and a side mirror. However, the motorist did not sustain any injuries.
Legal Implications: Although the initial investigation indicates that alcohol and drugs were not factors in the crash, the CHP is continuing their investigation into the specifics of the incident. Given that no arrests have been made, the circumstances leading to Thomas’s presence on the freeway and the driver’s response will be critically examined to determine any potential negligence or liability. However, there are also other important factors to consider, such as lighting conditions at the the time of the collision. Based on current information, the family of the victim could consider pursuing a wrongful death claim, which could address compensation for their loss, pain, and suffering.
My thoughts are with the family and friends of Ayanna Akilah Thomas during this incredibly difficult time. I hope that they are able to receive the support they need following this accident.
