Alex Bussing Killed in Van and Semi-Truck Collision in Arizona

Mesa, Arizona (September 18, 2025) — Authorities have identified the man killed in a two-vehicle collision Thursday morning in Mesa as Alex Bussing. According to Mesa Police, the crash occurred around 6:20 a.m. at the intersection of Brown and Higley roads and involved a van and a semi-truck.

Incident Details: Emergency crews arrived at the scene to find significant damage to both vehicles. Bussing, the driver of the van, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the semi-truck was transported to a nearby hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

The crash caused extensive closures on Higley Road for much of the day. Southbound lanes reopened around 3 p.m., while northbound lanes remained closed longer due to debris and ongoing cleanup. Police noted that rain was falling in the East Valley that morning, but the collision was not weather-related.

Investigation: Mesa Police detectives and crash reconstruction specialists are actively investigating the cause of the collision. Their work involves examining roadway evidence, including vehicle damage, skid marks, and impact points, to determine how the crash occurred. Investigators are also expected to review traffic signal data, witness accounts, and any available surveillance or dashcam footage from nearby businesses.

In serious commercial collisions, investigators frequently analyze the semi-truck’s electronic logging device (ELD) and onboard data recorder to identify speed, braking activity, and steering inputs prior to impact. They may also assess potential contributing factors such as driver fatigue, distraction, or mechanical failure. Toxicology testing and vehicle inspections are routine components of such investigations to rule out impairment or equipment malfunction.

Legal Considerations: Crashes between passenger vehicles and commercial trucks often result in catastrophic injuries or fatalities due to the size and weight difference between vehicles. Under Arizona law, trucking companies and their drivers have a duty to operate safely, maintain control, and ensure their equipment is properly maintained.

If the semi-truck driver or their employer is found negligent, the family of Alex Bussing may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Such a claim can help the family recover compensation for funeral expenses, loss of income, and emotional suffering.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Alex Bussing as they mourn his loss.
