Atwater, CA (March 18, 2025) – Abraham Bustos Guzman, 28, was struck and killed early Sunday morning while trying to assist victims of a crash on Highway 99 near Atwater. Authorities say the driver who hit him, along with the driver he had stopped to help, were both under the influence.
Incident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol, Guzman was driving southbound on Highway 99 just after 4:00 a.m. when he saw an SUV that had crashed into a guardrail. He pulled over to check on the driver, Sincere Collins, 22, and the passengers inside. While he was assisting them, another vehicle, driven by Yessica Partida, 23, crashed into the SUV and struck Guzman. He died at the scene.
Authorities say both Collins and Partida are suspected of driving under the influence at the time of the crash. Partida remains in custody on felony DUI charges, while Collins has been released with charges pending.
Guzman’s family described him as a selfless person who was always willing to help others. He had been working toward his dream of becoming a police officer and was just months away from achieving that goal.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: DUI-related fatalities often result in severe criminal and civil consequences. In cases like this, the families of victims may pursue wrongful death claims against those responsible. Investigators will likely examine whether additional negligence, such as speeding or reckless driving, contributed to the crash.
My deepest condolences go out to the family of Abraham Bustos Guzman.
