Semi-Truck Drivers, Abdullahi Mohamud, 39, and Scott Schilling, 53, Killed in Head-On Crash in North Dakota

Logan County, North Dakota (December 24, 2025) — Authorities have identified the two semi-truck drivers who were killed in a fatal head-on collision on Christmas Eve in rural Logan County, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

Incident Details: The crash occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Highway 30, about three miles south of Streeter. Investigators said a 2026 International semi-truck driven by Abdullahi Mohamud of Moorhead, Minnesota, and a 2025 Kenworth driven by Scott Schilling of Wishek, North Dakota, collided head-on under circumstances that remain under investigation.

Both drivers sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger riding with Mohamud suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Sanford Hospital in Bismarck for treatment. No update on the passenger’s condition was immediately available.

Highway 30 was closed for approximately six hours while emergency responders and investigators worked at the scene. The North Dakota Highway Patrol reported that road and weather conditions were dry at the time of the collision.

Investigation: The North Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the head-on collision between the two commercial vehicles. In crashes involving large trucks on rural highways, investigators typically focus on lane positioning, speed, driver reaction time, and visibility, as well as whether either vehicle crossed the center line prior to impact.

Troopers are expected to analyze physical roadway evidence, including skid marks, debris fields, and vehicle damage patterns, to determine the point of impact and the sequence of events. Investigators may also review electronic logging devices (ELDs), onboard data, and maintenance records from both trucks to assess driving hours, braking activity, and mechanical performance in the period leading up to the crash.

Because commercial vehicles are involved, investigators may also examine whether fatigue, distraction, or medical issues played a role, even when road and weather conditions are favorable.

Legal Considerations: Fatal head-on collisions between semi-trucks often raise complex liability questions due to the size and force of commercial vehicles. These crashes can devastate not only the drivers involved but also their families, who are left grappling with sudden and profound loss during what should have been a time of celebration.

If the investigation reveals negligence, whether related to lane departure, fatigue, or other operational factors, surviving family members of Mohamud and Schilling may have the right to pursue wrongful death claims to address funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and the lasting loss of companionship. The injured passenger may also file a personal injury lawsuit.  These civil claims may provide a path toward accountability. While no legal outcome can undo the harm, it can help families manage the burdens left behind and ensure that safety responsibilities are taken seriously.

I extend my sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of Abdullahi Mohamud and Scott Schilling, and I wish the injured passenger a speedy recovery.
