Mecca, CA (May 9, 2025) — A 45-year-old man, identified as Emmanuel Guevara of Mecca, was one of two drivers killed in a head-on collision Thursday afternoon on State Route 111, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.
Incident Details: The deadly crash occurred shortly after noon on May 8 on SR-111 south of Avenue 68, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). CHP Officer David Torres said a blue Honda Civic driver attempted to pass a slower vehicle by crossing into the northbound lane, where it collided head-on with a blue Acura TL.
Both drivers were killed in the impact and pronounced dead at the scene. Guevara was driving one of the vehicles involved. A female passenger, the sole survivor, was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs with injuries that have not yet been publicly detailed.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: CHP is continuing its investigation into the collision and has not determined whether drugs, alcohol, or excessive speed contributed to the crash. Investigators will also evaluate whether the attempted passing maneuver was performed in a legal passing zone and whether proper visibility or caution was exercised.
Depending on the investigation’s findings, Guevara’s and the other driver’s surviving family members may consider a wrongful death lawsuit to seek compensation for funeral costs, emotional trauma, and other damages.
The injured passenger may also file a personal injury claim for medical expenses (both past and future), lost wages or earning capacity, pain and suffering, emotional distress, and other related losses.
I extend our condolences to the loved ones of Emmanuel Guevara and the second unidentified victim and hope for a full recovery for the surviving passenger.
