SAND SPRINGS, OK (October 28, 2025) — Authorities identified 21-year-old Elijah David Crisp of Sand Springs as the rider killed Monday morning when his e-bike collided with a semi-truck on Highway 97. The collision shut down traffic near the bridge just north of Highway 51 for several hours.
Accident Details: The Sand Springs Police Department said the crash happened at a turn-around area south of the bridge on northbound Highway 97. Crisp had been riding his e-bike when he struck a semi-truck traveling through the same section of road.
Emergency personnel responded quickly and found Crisp critically injured on the roadway. Despite medical aid at the scene, he was pronounced dead soon after. The semi-truck driver remained on-site and cooperated fully with investigators. No other vehicles were involved.
Authorities closed all but one northbound lane as they documented tire marks, vehicle positions, and debris. Crews cleared the scene and reopened the highway later that afternoon.
Investigation: The Sand Springs Police Department, with assistance from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, continues to investigate what led to the collision. Investigators are assessing whether roadway design, visibility, or the turn-around layout contributed to the crash.
Officers said the truck driver showed no signs of impairment and that no charges are anticipated at this stage. Both vehicles will undergo mechanical inspections to determine if any defects or malfunctions played a role. Police also plan to review nearby traffic cameras and business surveillance footage for additional evidence.
Community members have expressed concerns about the safety of e-bike riders on highways where traffic moves at high speeds and road shoulders are limited. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol advises that e-bikes and low-power vehicles are safest on streets with lower speed limits or designated lanes.
Legal Considerations: Collisions between e-bikes and large commercial vehicles often involve complex factors, including right-of-way, visibility, and compliance with roadway restrictions. In cases where a fatality occurs, investigators rely on scene reconstruction, electronic data from the truck, and witness statements to establish how the impact occurred.
Families of victims may seek compensation through insurance coverage related to the vehicle involved, though the process can depend on the findings of the police report and evidence gathered during the investigation.
The loss of Elijah David Crisp has deeply affected the Sand Springs community. Friends and relatives have shared condolences online, remembering him as a kind and energetic young man whose life ended far too soon.
