Box Truck Occupants Injured After BMW Crash in El Cajon

EL CAJON, CA (October 17, 2025) — Two delivery workers suffered minor injuries after a BMW sedan collided with their box truck in El Cajon on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Accident Details: Just after 3:25 p.m., emergency personnel were dispatched to the intersection of Broadway and Oro Street following reports of a serious two-vehicle collision. Upon arrival, first responders discovered a delivery box truck overturned on its side.

According to witness statements, the truck had briefly caught fire moments after the crash. Fortunately, both delivery workers were able to exit the vehicle on their own and were treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, a black BMW, was identified as 19-year-old Jesse Hernandez of El Cajon. Police say he was trapped in the heavily damaged sedan. Emergency responders extricated him and transported him to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His vehicle sustained extensive damage from the impact.

Eyewitnesses reported that the BMW appeared to be engaged in a speed contest with another vehicle before the collision occurred. The other vehicle involved in the alleged racing activity left the scene and has not yet been identified.

Investigation: Authorities from the El Cajon Police Department are continuing their investigation into the cause of the crash. Lt. Joe Crawford confirmed that excessive speed is considered a contributing factor.

Investigators are reviewing traffic camera footage and interviewing witnesses in an effort to determine whether another driver may have been involved in an illegal street race with Hernandez’s vehicle.

Police are asking the public for assistance. Anyone who witnessed the crash or may have information about the second vehicle is encouraged to call 619-579-3311. No arrests have been made as of this report.

Legal Considerations: When commercial vehicle drivers are injured due to another party’s reckless or illegal behavior, they may be entitled to pursue compensation for medical costs, lost wages, and emotional trauma. Even if injuries appear minor initially, long-term physical or psychological effects could impact the workers’ well-being and employment.

Employers may also face disruption from these types of collisions. Damage to fleet vehicles, employee downtime, and increased insurance premiums are common consequences when delivery teams are involved in serious traffic accidents through no fault of their own.

We send our best wishes for a full recovery to the injured delivery workers and express sympathy to the family of Jesse Hernandez during this difficult time.
