SAN DIEGO, CA (October 17, 2025) — An 86-year-old man riding a bicycle was critically injured Thursday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle in the Egger Highlands neighborhood of San Diego, authorities said.
Accident Details: The collision occurred around 3:49 p.m. at the intersection of Main Street and Alamitos Avenue. According to the San Diego Police Department, the cyclist was traveling north on Alamitos Avenue when he entered the westbound lanes of Main Street. As he crossed into the number two lane of westbound traffic, he was hit by a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by a 39-year-old man.
The impact resulted in severe trauma. Police reported that the cyclist suffered a fractured scapula, broken ankle and foot, and a blood clot near his brain. Paramedics were called to the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. His identity has not yet been released.
Investigation: The San Diego Police Department’s Traffic Division is handling the investigation. Officer J. Perales, who logged the collision, said investigators are evaluating factors such as road conditions, visibility, traffic signals, and whether either party failed to yield. At this time, no charges or citations have been issued.
Detectives are also determining whether the cyclist had the right-of-way or entered the roadway unexpectedly. The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Authorities have stated that impairment does not appear to be a factor.
Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashboard or home surveillance footage is encouraged to call SDPD Traffic Investigators or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
Legal Considerations: Crashes involving cyclists often result in serious injuries and can lead to complex liability assessments. If investigators determine that the driver failed to exercise due care or yield appropriately, the injured cyclist may have grounds to pursue compensation for medical expenses, rehabilitation, and long-term care needs.
Given the seriousness of the injuries, this incident may also prompt questions about road safety for seniors who rely on bicycles for transportation, along with whether additional signage, visibility improvements, or traffic enforcement is needed at the intersection.
We extend our hopes for a full recovery to the injured cyclist.
