San Diego, California (February 17, 2026) — A 22-year-old San Diego man was left with severe injuries, and his family’s dog was killed after a hit-and-run crash Saturday night in the Emerald Hills neighborhood.
Relatives have identified the victim as Eduardo Ramos. His family’s 10-year-old Chihuahua, Sylinica, was killed in the collision.
The crash occurred just after 10:00 p.m. on Roswell Street.
Incident Details: According to family members and surveillance footage they provided, Ramos was crossing Roswell Street with Sylinica when a dark-colored sedan approached at a high rate of speed. Video reportedly shows the vehicle failing to stop at a posted stop sign before striking Ramos and the dog.
The impact left Ramos lying in the roadway with serious injuries to his legs, head, and lower spine. Family members who heard the crash rushed outside. His father, Mauricio Ramos, said he arrived home shortly afterward to find his son critically injured.
Emergency responders transported Ramos to a hospital, where he underwent surgery on his legs. According to his family, surgeons inserted a metal plate and screws to stabilize multiple fractures. Doctors have indicated that his recovery may take at least six months, and additional procedures could be necessary depending on how he heals.
Sylinica died at the scene.
The suspect vehicle fled immediately after the collision. The family described it as a dark-colored sedan. Another camera angle reportedly captured the vehicle speeding along Roswell Street moments before the crash.
Investigation: The San Diego Police Department is investigating the hit-and-run. In cases involving high-speed residential collisions, investigators typically review surveillance footage frame by frame to determine the vehicle’s make, model, distinguishing features, and possible direction of travel after leaving the scene.
Crash reconstruction may include analyzing skid marks, debris fields, and impact angles to estimate vehicle speed and determine whether the driver attempted to brake before impact. The reported failure to stop at a posted stop sign may also factor into potential charges if the suspect is identified.
Detectives may canvass nearby homes and businesses for additional camera footage, particularly to capture the vehicle’s path through adjacent streets. Damage patterns, such as front-end impact or windshield damage, may help identify the suspect vehicle if it appears at a repair shop. Authorities are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
Legal Considerations: Under California law, a driver involved in a collision resulting in injury is required to stop, render aid, and provide identifying information. Leaving the scene of a crash causing serious bodily injury is a felony offense. If the suspect is identified, criminal charges could include felony hit-and-run and, potentially, additional charges for reckless driving or failure to obey traffic control devices.
From a civil standpoint, Eduardo may have grounds to pursue a personal injury claim to recover damages for medical expenses, future treatment, lost income, and pain and suffering.
I wish Eduardo Ramos and his family healing and strength during this difficult time.
