Phelan, CA (May 2, 2024) – A tragic hit-and-run incident earlier this month resulted in the death of a 43-year-old man from Phelan, identified as Dustin Robert Odum. The incident occurred just after 7 a.m. on May 2 along Johnson Road, between Phelan and Nielsen roads.
Incident Overview: Dustin Robert Odum was walking along the west side of Johnson Road when he was struck by a northbound car. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP) officials, the driver did not stop to render aid or call for help. First responders arrived at the scene to find Odum mortally wounded on the roadside; he was pronounced dead at the scene by the authorities.
Vehicle Description and Call for Witnesses: Investigators found debris from the vehicle involved at the scene. It is believed to be a black or dark gray sedan with significant damage to the right side of its bumper, as well as its hood, fender, and headlight. CHP is actively seeking witnesses or anyone with information about the vehicle or the incident. Anyone with information is urged to contact the CHP’s Victorville Office at (760) 241-1186 to assist in the investigation and to help bring justice for Dustin Robert Odum.
Legal Implications: The circumstances of the crash suggest a clear case of hit-and-run, which is a criminal offense. Additionally, the family of the victim may have grounds to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver once identified. This civil action could provide compensation for funeral expenses, loss of companionship, and other damages related to the death. Legal proceedings in such cases can also serve to hold the offending party accountable beyond criminal charges.
My heart goes out to the friends and family of Dustin Robert Odum at this difficult time. I hope that the authorities are able to locate the hit-and-run driver.
