Victorville, CA (June 23, 2024) – On the evening of Sunday, June 23, 2024, a tragic DUI-related off-road crash near the Mojave Riverbed in Victorville resulted in the death of 61-year-old Cynthia Lynn Lorntzen and left another passenger seriously injured.
Accident Details: According to authorities, a black Can-Am carrying four occupants was traveling northeast along a dirt road adjacent to Shay Road. As the vehicle approached a barrier, the driver attempted to brake but was unsuccessful. The Can-Am veered off the dirt roadway, descended a large embankment, and rolled over. This accident led to significant injuries for a 19-year-old female passenger, who was subsequently transported to a trauma center for urgent medical care. Tragically, a second passenger, Cynthia Lynn Lorntzen, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigation: Investigators have determined that the driver, Francisco Enrique Gonzalez, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury lawyer, I find that several factors in this case deserve further consideration.
- Driver Liability: Francisco Enrique Gonzalez was found to be under the influence of alcohol. Driving under the influence is a serious offense that can implicate both civil and criminal liability.
- Vehicle Manufacturer and Safety: It may be relevant to investigate if any mechanical failures or design flaws in the Can-Am could have contributed to the accident. The braking system’s failure, as reported, needs a thorough examination to rule out any defects.
- Proper Warnings: Considering the crash occurred on a dirt road adjacent to Shay Road, there might be a question of whether adequate signage and warnings were in place to alert drivers of potential dangers, such as the steep embankment. If not, this may open local government authorities to a negligence claim as they should have warned of the danger.
The family of Cynthia Lynn Lorntzen may be able to file a wrongful death claim against the party responsible for the accident. Similarly, the injured individual may be able to file a personal injury claim.
My deepest condolences are with the family and friends of Cynthia Lynn Lorntzen as they go through this difficult time. I also wish the injured passenger a fast recovery.
