DUI Crash in Redding Claims the Life of Kannon Wayne Chaney

Redding, CA (August 25, 2024) – On Sunday morning, a tragic DUI crash in Redding claimed the life of 21-year-old Kannon Wayne Chaney of Anderson.

Accident Details: The incident occurred when the vehicle, driven by 19-year-old Cristian Bennett of Redding, crashed, leading to Chaney’s untimely death. The Redding Police Department and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) are investigating the circumstances of the crash.

Bennett has been arrested and charged with several serious offenses, including vehicular manslaughter, DUI causing great bodily injury or death, and driving without a license. A second passenger in the vehicle was unharmed and released at the scene.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Driving under the influence (DUI) is a form of negligence. When a driver chooses to get behind the wheel while intoxicated, they are knowingly putting the lives of their passengers, other road users, and themselves at serious risk.

The law recognizes the inherent danger in DUI, which is why penalties are severe, especially when it leads to serious injury or death. Besides the criminal charges, Chaney’s family may be able to hold the driver accountable civilly by filing a wrongful death claim, seeking compensation for their loss.

I extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Kannon Wayne Chaney during this incredibly difficult time.
