Oxnard, CA (January 18, 2025) – A tragic crash at the intersection of Victoria Avenue and Doris Avenue in Oxnard claimed one life and injured Wuyu Zhu on the night of January 18, 2025.
Accident Details: The collision involved a silver Nissan Cube and a white Toyota Sienna minivan. According to the Oxnard Police Department, the Nissan, driven by 19-year-old Angel Zamudio, was traveling northbound on Victoria Avenue when it broadsided the Toyota Sienna as it crossed the intersection around 9:45 p.m. The impact caused severe damage to both vehicles. A male passenger in the Toyota died at the scene. The Toyota’s driver, 55-year-old Wuyu Zhu of Oxnard, was rushed to Ventura County Medical Center in critical but stable condition. Zamudio sustained minor injuries and was treated at the hospital.
Investigation: Zamudio was arrested for suspected alcohol impairment. He has since been booked into Ventura County Jail on DUI-related charges. Authorities believe excessive speed and alcohol were contributing factors.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. In addition to the criminal charges faced by Zamudio, Zhu and the family of the deceased may have grounds to pursue civil claims. Wrongful death and personal injury claims allow victims or their families to seek compensation when someone’s negligence causes harm or death. Negligence involves failing to act with reasonable care, leading to injury or loss.
Driving under the influence (DUI) inherently breaches the duty of care to drive safely. Intoxication impairs judgment, reaction time, and coordination, making it a clear form of reckless behavior. Depending on the investigation’s outcome, the family of the deceased may be able to bring a wrongful death claim against Zamudio, alleging negligence caused their loved one’s death. Recoverable compensation may include funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional suffering. Zhu may be able to file a personal injury claim to seek damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain resulting from the collision.
My sincerest condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time. I wish Wuyu Zhu a fast recovery.
