Dr. Bennie Weber, 78, Killed in Amador County Bicycle Crash

Amador County, California  (January 19, 2026) — A longtime cyclist and retired podiatrist from Lodi was killed Monday afternoon after a collision between his bicycle and a passenger vehicle on Buena Vista Road in Amador County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The victim was identified as Dr. Bennie Weber, 78, a well-known and deeply respected member of the regional cycling community.

Incident Details: The fatal crash occurred at approximately 3:10 p.m. on Buena Vista Road, south of Camanche Parkway North, in the area between Camanche and Pardee reservoirs. CHP officials reported that Weber was riding his bicycle in the northbound direction when the collision occurred.

According to the CHP’s preliminary findings, Weber attempted to make a left turn near the intersection with Camanche Parkway North at the same moment a northbound Toyota Corolla, driven by a 30-year-old man from Rancho Cordova, moved into the opposing lane to pass. The two paths converged, resulting in a collision between the vehicle and Weber’s bicycle.

Emergency personnel responded quickly and attempted lifesaving measures at the scene, but Weber succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead there. The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene following the collision. No arrests were announced, and investigators did not immediately indicate whether speed, distraction, or impairment were suspected factors.

Investigation:  The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. In bicycle-versus-vehicle collisions, investigators typically analyze the timing and positioning of both parties to determine whether the cyclist’s turn was initiated safely and whether the passing driver exercised appropriate caution.

Key elements of the investigation are expected to include an examination of lane markings, passing zones, and visibility conditions along Buena Vista Road. Investigators may assess whether the roadway allowed for safe passing at that location and whether the driver had sufficient time and distance to observe Weber’s maneuver before attempting to overtake him.

CHP will evaluate signaling and driver compliance, using physical evidence like tire marks and vehicle damage to reconstruct events. Since the crash happened in the afternoon, lighting and weather are unlikely primary factors, but roadway geometry near intersections and reservoir access may influence fault. Investigation continues.

Legal Considerations:  Under California law, bicyclists are afforded the same rights and responsibilities as motorists, and drivers are required to exercise reasonable care when passing or sharing the roadway with cyclists. This includes ensuring adequate clearance when overtaking and remaining alert for turning movements, especially near intersections.

As the CHP investigation continues, it will play a critical role in clarifying how this tragic collision unfolded and whether preventable factors contributed to the loss of a respected physician, athlete, and community member.

Pending the outcome, Dr. Weber’s family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to determine whether negligence played a role. Such claims can examine whether a driver passed unsafely, failed to maintain a proper lookout, or violated traffic laws designed to protect vulnerable road users.

I offer my heartfelt condolences to Dr. Weber’s family, friends, and the cycling community as they mourn his passing.
