Fairfield, CA (January 18, 2026) – The Solano County Coroners’ Office identified D’Juan Brown Jr. (21), Douglas McClain III (21), and Sweta Burathoki (34) as the three people killed in a wrong-way crash in the Fairfield area on Sunday.
Incident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), around 2 a.m. on Sunday, a white Dodge Charger collided with a black Land Rover Discovery on the westbound side of Interstate 80, east of the Cordelia Weigh Station. Brown and McClain were in the Dodge Charger. Burathoki was driving the Land Rover.
One of the cars was driving on the wrong side of the highway, though it has not yet been determined which one.
All three people died from injuries from the crash.
The CHP has not yet confirmed if drugs or alcohol were factors in the wrong-way crash.
Investigation: The CHP will continue to investigate the wrong-way crash on westbound Interstate 80 near the Cordelia Weigh Station that killed D’Juan Brown Jr., Douglas McClain III, and Sweta Burathoki.
Investigators will work to determine which vehicle was traveling the wrong direction and how it entered the freeway, including whether an incorrect on-ramp entry, driver confusion, or other factors contributed.
The CHP will also review physical evidence from the scene, vehicle damage, debris patterns, and the final resting positions of both vehicles to reconstruct the collision and establish a clear timeline. Investigators will also review toxicology results to determine whether drugs or alcohol played any role.
Legal Considerations: Wrong-way freeway crashes often lead to serious civil and criminal consequences, but liability depends on identifying which driver was traveling against traffic. In many cases, the driver who entered the freeway going the wrong way is considered the at-fault party.
If the investigation confirms which vehicle was traveling the wrong direction, the surviving family of the driver who was traveling the correct way may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim against the wrong-way driver. Since three people died in the crash, the claim may also be brought against the wrong-way driver’s insurance and estate.
Wrongful death claims may help surviving loved ones seek compensation for funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, and the loss of companionship and care caused by this tragedy.
My heart goes out to the families and loved ones of D’Juan Brown Jr., Douglas McClain III, and Sweta Burathoki as they grieve this devastating loss.
