Eureka, CA (May 22, 2024) – A tragic chain of events unfolded on I Street in Eureka, resulting in the death of a pedestrian and injuries to several others, as reported by the Eureka Police Department (EPD).
Incident Details: The initial incident occurred around 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, May 22, when a driver struck 66-year-old David Sprague of Eureka on the 900 block of I Street. The situation escalated as the vehicle involved continued north, leading to additional collisions near 7th Street, including one vehicle crashing into a building. Bystanders immediately provided life-saving efforts to Sprague until EPD officers and Humboldt Bay Fire personnel arrived. Despite their efforts, Sprague succumbed to his injuries. One of the drivers involved in the subsequent crashes had to be extricated from their vehicle by emergency responders. Several individuals involved were transported to the hospital with various injuries. The EPD continues to investigate the sequence of events that led to these crashes.
Legal Implications: This complex incident could have significant legal repercussions depending on the results of the investigation. Authorities will likely look into factors such as speed, impairment, and adherence to traffic laws. The family of David Sprague could also pursue a wrongful death claim for their loss. Additionally, other injured parties could file personal injury claims.
My thoughts are with the family and friends of David Sprague during this difficult time, as well as with those who were injured. Hopefully the investigation reveals more information about the cause of the accident.
