San Diego, CA (April 28, 2024) – The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified Darren Stevenson, 54, as the homeless man who tragically died this Sunday from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run incident near Balboa Park last month.
Incident Overview: On the evening of April 3, at approximately 8:15 p.m., Stevenson was walking southbound with a companion in the bicycle lane of the 1300 block of Pershing Drive when he was struck from behind by a vehicle. The impact left him with severe injuries, including a brain hemorrhage, a collapsed lung, and multiple fractures to his skull and spine. Despite immediate medical attention, Stevenson succumbed to his injuries nearly a month later, on Sunday morning at Scripps Mercy Hospital in Hillcrest.
Investigation and Legal Implications: The driver involved in the incident did not stop to provide aid and fled the scene. Debris recovered at the location suggests the vehicle may be a black 2007-2012 Toyota Camry, which likely sustained significant damage, including a missing passenger-side mirror. San Diego Police continue to investigate the incident and are seeking the public’s help to locate the driver. If the driver is apprehended, the family of Stevenson could choose to pursue a wrongful death claim for their loss.
I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Darren Stevenson after this awful act. If anyone has information about the incident, please contact San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
