Darlene Scalf, 76, Killed in East Oakland Hit-and-Run at Fruitvale and East 27th Street

OAKLAND, CA (July 13, 2025) – Darlene Scalf, a 76-year-old woman from Fontana, was killed Sunday morning in a hit-and-run crash while crossing the street in East Oakland, according to the Oakland Police Department.

Accident Details: The crash occurred around 8:45 a.m. at the intersection of Fruitvale Avenue and East 27th Street. Police say Scalf was walking in a marked crosswalk when a driver turned onto westbound East 27th Street from northbound Fruitvale Avenue and struck her.

Emergency responders transported Scalf to a nearby hospital, where she died from her injuries.

The driver fled the scene but was located and arrested shortly after the collision. Authorities have not released the suspect’s name. Police also noted that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The Oakland Police Department Traffic Investigation Unit is handling the case. Fatal pedestrian accidents involving hit-and-run drivers often lead to both criminal prosecution and civil claims. In cases where alcohol is involved, additional penalties and liabilities may apply.

Families of pedestrians killed in traffic collisions may pursue wrongful death claims to cover funeral expenses, lost companionship, and other damages resulting from the crash.

We extend our condolences to the family and loved ones of Darlene Scalf during this tragic time.
