Cyclist William Sterling Yoder Killed in Collision with Semi-Truck in South Charlotte

Charlotte, NC (May 9, 2025) — A 73-year-old cyclist, identified as William Sterling Yoder, was struck and killed Friday afternoon in a collision involving a semi-truck at a major intersection in South Charlotte, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Incident Details: The fatal crash occurred around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of East Woodlawn Road and Park Road. Officers responding to the scene found Yoder unresponsive in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 39-year-old semi-truck driver remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. Police stated that there was no indication of impairment or speeding at the time of the crash. The scene was cleared by 6:00 p.m., but authorities asked the public to avoid the area during the investigation.

As of this report, police have not confirmed whether any charges will be filed against the truck driver.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: CMP continues to investigate the cause of the crash, including whether visibility issues, right-of-way violations, or driver inattention played a role. Authorities may also review any nearby surveillance footage or witness statements to determine the sequence of events.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, Yoder’s family may have grounds to file a wrongful death claim, which provides compensation for funeral expenses, emotional suffering, and the loss of companionship.

My condolences go out to the Yoder family and loved ones.
