One Dead, One Injured After Tractor-Trailer Hits Car on I-55 in Copiah County

Copiah County, MS (October 13, 2025) – One person died and another was injured Monday when a tractor-trailer collided with a passenger car on Interstate 55, according to the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Accident Details: Authorities said a 2022 Mack tractor-trailer and a 2009 Nissan Altima were traveling north on I-55 when the truck hit the car. The impact left one person dead and another injured; officials did not immediately release which occupant was fatally hurt. The crash prompted an extended on-scene response while troopers documented evidence and managed traffic through the area. No further information about additional vehicles or contributing circumstances was immediately available.

Investigation: MHP continues to investigate and has not yet released a cause. Troopers are analyzing roadway evidence, vehicle damage, and statements to determine whether factors such as speed, inattentiveness, or a lane-change error contributed. Officials identified the drivers as a 62-year-old man operating the tractor-trailer and a 20-year-old man driving the Altima; additional details will follow after next-of-kin notification and completion of the preliminary report.

Legal Considerations: Fatal crashes involving commercial trucks typically require review of driver logs, electronic control module data, and maintenance records to assess compliance with safety regulations. Families may consider wrongful death claims to recover funeral expenses, loss of support, and other damages if negligence is established. Injured survivors may also pursue compensation for medical treatment and lost wages.

This was a heartbreaking crash for those involved and the Copiah County community. I offer sincere condolences to the family of the person who lost their life and hope for a full recovery for the injured individual.
