Modesto, CA (February 25, 2025) – Bicyclist Jose De Jesus Munoz Casillas, 61, died after he was struck by a vehicle on Sylvan Avenue, east of Oakdale Road.
Accident Details: The accident occurred at the intersection of Sylvan Avenue and Wood Sorrel Drive at approximately 7:36 p.m. The preliminary investigation found that a white Scion XB traveling west on Sylvan Avenue struck Casillas as he was crossing Sylvan by the intersection. Casillas was found in the roadway. He succumbed to his severe injuries at the scene. The Modesto Police Department’s Traffic Unit is investigating the cause of the crash. Any witnesses are encouraged to come forward.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Bicyclists are among the most vulnerable road users, and collisions with motor vehicles often result in severe or fatal injuries. Investigators will ask several key questions. The main focus will be who had the right of way. To determine this, investigators will examine marked crosswalks and traffic signals at the time of the crash. Investigators will also determine if intoxication, speeding, fatigue, or distraction contributed to the crash.
If evidence suggests another’s negligence caused the crash, Casillas’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.
I extend my condolences to Jose De Jesus Munoz Casillas’s family and loved ones. I hope they receive the support and answers they need during this difficult time.
