Roseville, CA (September 16, 2025) – A man in his 60s died after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle near the Interstate 80 on-ramp from southbound Riverside Avenue.
Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 10:45 a.m. as the bicyclist entered the crosswalk before the westbound I-80 on-ramp. He was hit by a silver 2021 Toyota Camry driven by a 55-year-old man from Citrus Heights. Emergency responders closed the on-ramp for several hours while they assisted at the scene and investigated the crash.
Investigation: The Roseville Police Department first reported the incident around 11 a.m. and assisted CHP with emergency response. It is not yet known whether impairment played a role. The crash remains under investigation.
Crashes at freeway on-ramps can be especially dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians due to higher vehicle speeds and merging traffic. In this case, investigators will likely examine skid marks, debris patterns, and vehicle positioning to determine how the collision unfolded. They may also review traffic camera footage, dashcam videos, and witness statements.
The California Highway Patrol may also assess the signage, visibility, and timing of the signals at the on-ramp crosswalk to understand any other factors that could have contributed to the crash. Preserving these records early is essential for accurately reconstructing the incident.
Legal Considerations: All motorists should approach intersections and freeway ramps cautiously. Drivers are expected to watch for people crossing and yield the right of way when required to ensure everyone’s safety. If the evidence shows the driver acted negligently, the victim’s surviving family members may be able to bring a wrongful death claim. Under this claim, the cyclist’s family may be able to recover compensation for funeral and burial expenses, the loss of financial support or household services, and the emotional harm caused by the sudden death of a loved one.
In the aftermath of a collision, investigators must also analyze liability by determining who legally had the right of way, whether traffic signals or crosswalk indicators were followed, and whether either party was traveling too fast or distracted. This review helps determine how the crash occurred and who bears responsibility for the harm caused.
I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the cyclist who lost his life in this tragic collision.
