Atherton, CA (May 11, 2025) — A collision last Wednesday claimed the life of Dylan Taylor, a beloved teacher and youth sports coach in San Mateo County, who was hit and killed by a garbage truck while riding his bicycle to work along Middlefield Road in Atherton.
Incident Details: The crash occurred while Taylor was cycling on a familiar route through the neighborhood where he grew up to his La Entrada Middle School job. Emergency responders arrived at the scene, but Taylor did not survive his injuries.
Authorities have confirmed that the garbage truck driver remained at the scene, appeared not to be impaired, and is cooperating fully with investigators.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The circumstances surrounding the crash remain under review. Police will examine whether factors such as driver attentiveness, vehicle blind spots, or road conditions played a role in the collision.
Depending on the investigation’s outcome, Taylor’s family may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim. Compensation in such a case could address funeral costs, emotional anguish, and the long-term impact of losing a loved one so embedded in the community.
I extend my condolences to the Taylor family, students, and loved ones.
