Truck Fire Closes I-285 North at I-20 in DeKalb County

DeKalb County, GA (October 9, 2025) – A tractor-trailer caught fire Thursday morning following a crash on Interstate 285 northbound at Interstate 20, leading to a full freeway shutdown and one reported injury, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Accident Details: Officials said the incident occurred just after 7 a.m. when a tractor-trailer was involved in a collision that caused the vehicle to ignite. Flames and heavy black smoke billowed over the interstate as firefighters worked for hours to extinguish the fire and remove debris. One driver sustained injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Traffic was backed up for several miles as all lanes were closed between Flat Shoals Road and I-20 during the morning commute. Crews reopened the lanes just before noon after confirming that the road surface and guardrails were safe.

Investigation: DeKalb County Fire Rescue and the Georgia State Patrol are investigating what led to the crash and fire. Officials are reviewing potential contributing factors, including speed, equipment malfunction, or mechanical failure. Investigators also plan to examine the tractor-trailer’s cargo and maintenance records to determine if any safety violations occurred. The names of those involved have not been released.

Legal Considerations: Collisions involving commercial trucks that result in fires often prompt investigations into vehicle maintenance, cargo safety, and driver conduct. Injured victims may pursue compensation for medical care, vehicle damage, and other losses if negligence is determined. Documentation such as police reports, medical records, and photos from the scene can play a key role in supporting legal claims.

This was a dangerous and disruptive event for commuters traveling through DeKalb County. I wish the injured driver a full and swift recovery.
