South Gate, CA (January 12, 2026) – Aracely Macedo, 26, was struck and killed by an erratic driver who veered onto the sidewalk while she was walking at South Gate Park on Monday, January 12.
Incident Details: According to Macedo’s family, on Monday, January 12, 2026, Macedo and her sister, Myrna Macedo, were walking together in South Gate Park. A vehicle suddenly veered toward them while they were walking on the sidewalk. Myrna said she tried to warn her sister to move. Myrna saw the impact and said it was really strong, knocking down a pole.
Video from the scene showed extensive damage to a light pole, a truck, and a bench.
Macedo was taken to the hospital, but did not survive.
Family members also reported that the driver of the vehicle was handcuffed and taken from the scene. He later appeared at the hospital with law enforcement and was released to his family.
Investigation: Authorities are continuing to investigate what caused the driver to veer onto the sidewalk at South Gate Park and strike Aracely Macedo. Investigators will likely review witness statements, scene evidence, and any available video footage to determine the vehicle’s speed, the driver’s actions leading up to the crash, and whether distraction, impairment, or a medical emergency may have contributed.
