San Mateo, CA (June 20, 2025) — A 30-year-old mother from South San Francisco was killed and her two young sons critically injured Thursday evening after their vehicle was struck by an SUV that ran a red light at the intersection of Alameda de las Pulgas and Highway 92, according to local authorities.
Incident Details: The fatal crash occurred at approximately 6:17 p.m. when a Ford SUV, exiting eastbound Highway 92, failed to stop for a red light and broadsided a Toyota Prius traveling north on Alameda de las Pulgas. The Prius was driven by Yina Marcela Ramos Bello, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Her two sons, ages 5 and 7, were in the car at the time and were transported to a nearby hospital in critical but stable condition as of Friday. The driver of the Ford, a male whose identity has not yet been released, sustained minor injuries and was also hospitalized.
During the investigation, the intersection and nearby freeway ramps were closed for about four hours.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: Authorities confirmed that the Ford driver was not impaired at the time, but the investigation is ongoing to determine why he failed to stop at the red light. Running a red light is a clear violation of California traffic law and, in this case, appears to have directly caused the fatal crash. If confirmed, the Ford driver could face both criminal charges and civil liability.
Depending on the findings of the investigation, the surviving children and the family of Ms. Ramos Bello may have grounds to file wrongful death and personal injury claims to cover funeral costs, medical expenses, and emotional trauma.
My deepest condolences go out to the family of Yina Marcela Ramos Bello, and my hopes are with her children for a full recovery.
