Mecca, CA (December 20, 2024) – On the evening of December 20, 2024, a tragic collision occurred on Highway 86 near 66th Avenue in Mecca, killing 51-year-old Shuru Zhang of La Puente,
Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a black Chrysler traveling in the wrong lane collided head-on with a white Honda Civic around 9:05 p.m. The driver of the Honda, Zhang, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Chrysler, a 20-year-old man, and his passenger, an 18-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment. Authorities arrested the Chrysler’s driver on suspicion of felony DUI. The CHP continues to investigate the crash.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Driving under the influence is a violation of California law that creates a heightened risk of harm to others. It breaches the duty of care owed to other road users and demonstrates reckless disregard for public safety. In addition to the suspicion of DUI, the Chrysler driver also traveled in the wrong lane.
