Bridgeport, WV (March 10, 2025) — An elderly wrong-way driver on Interstate 79 left behind a trail of wrecked vehicles Monday evening, causing a chaotic scene near Exit 121 in Harrison County. Authorities confirmed that although multiple people were involved, no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Incident Overview: The incident began when 911 dispatchers received a call reporting a white vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-79 near the Meadowbrook Mall exit. Before law enforcement could intervene, the vehicle struck at least four cars. Some drivers swerved or pulled over to avoid a collision, while at least one vehicle crashed during the attempt.
Bridgeport Fire Department officials said most of the damage occurred in the northbound lanes. One of the vehicles struck became disabled and blocked all three lanes of traffic, leading to extended delays. Emergency crews from Bridgeport Fire and EMS, Bridgeport Police, Harrison County Sheriff’s Deputies, and West Virginia State Police responded to the scene.
According to State Trooper Isaiah Harmon, one person was transported to the hospital, another was treated at the scene, and others declined medical attention. Anmoore EMS also transported a patient from the area. The wrong-way driver was eventually stopped near mile marker 117 and transported to a hospital due to his condition.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: While officials confirmed the driver was an elderly man, they have not released his name. Preliminary information suggests he may have been receiving treatment for dementia or Alzheimer’s. Although he was not arrested at the scene, he was cited, and additional charges may follow as the investigation progresses.
Bridgeport Police are handling the collisions within city limits, while West Virginia State Police continue investigating crashes outside those boundaries. Law enforcement is also reviewing whether roadway design, signage, or lighting may have contributed to the driver’s confusion.
Depending on investigative findings, injured parties may have the right to pursue legal claims to recover damages for medical expenses, lost wages, and emotional distress.
I extend my sincere wishes for the swift recovery of all involved.
