Tehachapi, California (February 18, 2026) — A 23-year-old Tehachapi man died several days after being involved in a traffic collision on Highway 202 in Kern County, according to authorities.
The Kern County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Willy Paul Preston Little, of Tehachapi. The crash occurred at approximately 8:13 p.m. on February 18 along Highway 202 west of Jefferey Road.
Incident Details: According to the coroner’s office, Little was driving a vehicle on Highway 202 when it collided with another vehicle along the roadway.
Emergency responders transported Little to Kern Medical for treatment following the crash. Despite medical care, he succumbed to his injuries three days later, according to officials.
Authorities have not yet released details about the second vehicle involved in the crash or whether any other individuals were injured.
Highway 202, which runs through the mountainous area west of Tehachapi, is a two-lane roadway where crashes sometimes occur due to curves, elevation changes, and varying traffic speeds. Officials have not indicated whether weather, roadway conditions, or other factors contributed to this particular collision.
Investigation: The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash.
In collisions on rural or semi-rural highways like Highway 202, investigators typically examine several factors, including vehicle speed, lane positioning, and whether either driver crossed the center line or failed to yield the right-of-way.
Crash reconstruction teams may analyze vehicle damage, debris patterns, skid marks, and roadway evidence to determine how the impact occurred. Officers may also review witness statements or, when available, electronic vehicle data to better understand the moments leading up to the collision.
When a victim survives the initial crash but later succumbs to injuries sustained during the collision, investigators and medical officials typically review medical records and autopsy findings to confirm that the injuries directly resulted from the crash.
At this time, authorities have not announced any citations or criminal charges related to the incident. The investigation remains ongoing.
Legal Considerations: Fatal crashes involving multiple vehicles often raise questions about negligence, right-of-way, and whether either driver failed to operate their vehicle safely under roadway conditions. Even when a victim passes away days after a collision, the legal analysis remains focused on whether the crash injuries were the direct cause of death and whether any negligent conduct contributed to the incident.
If investigators determine that another driver’s actions contributed to the collision, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for funeral expenses and the emotional and financial losses resulting from the tragedy.
I offer my sincere condolences to Willy Paul Preston Little’s family and loved ones during this challenging period.
