Spartanburg County, SC (May 23, 2025) – An 80-year-old man died late Thursday night after being struck by a tractor-trailer while crossing Interstate 26, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Accident Details: The crash occurred around 11:50 p.m. near mile marker 1 on the eastbound side of I-26. Troopers say a tractor-trailer traveling east hit Willie Jernell Keaton as he attempted to cross the highway on foot.
Keaton was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:19 a.m., according to officials. The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office has scheduled a forensic exam for Saturday to assist in the investigation.
Legal Considerations: Fatal pedestrian crashes on interstates raise questions about visibility, road access, and potential driver awareness. In this case, investigators will examine lighting conditions, truck speed, and whether Keaton had any legitimate reason to be on the highway at that hour. Commercial vehicle data may be reviewed to assess reaction time or braking.
Depending on findings, the truck driver or trucking company may be cleared of any fault, or a wrongful death claim could be considered if preventable factors are discovered.
Ongoing Investigation: The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate. No charges have been announced, and no additional details about the truck driver have been released.
I extend my condolences to the family and friends of Willie Jernell Keaton.
