WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. — One man was killed and another seriously injured in a tractor-trailer crash Friday evening. According to the Virginia State Police, the collision occurred at 8:03 p.m. on Interstate 81 southbound at the 26-mile marker.
Incident details show that 90-year-old Jimmie L. Fields of Lewis Center, Ohio, was driving a Ford E-150 in the left lane when the vehicle was struck by an International 9200I tractor-trailer that was making a lane change. The Ford then hit the guardrail, went into the median, and struck a concrete pillar. Fields died at the scene. His passenger, 75-year-old Chester A. Fields, suffered serious injuries.
The tractor-trailer, driven by 52-year-old Robert T. Turnage II of Collins, Mississippi, also came to rest in the median. Turnage suffered minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, and charges are pending against the tractor-trailer driver, according to Virginia State Police.
