Mercer County, WV (May 31, 2025) — Two people were killed and a third seriously injured early Saturday morning when a parked vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer along Interstate 77, according to the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office.
Incident Details: The crash occurred around 2:00 a.m. in the southbound lanes of I-77 near mile marker 5. Authorities say a passenger vehicle with three occupants was parked on the shoulder of the highway when a passing tractor-trailer hit it. Two individuals in the car died at the scene, and the third sustained severe injuries. The driver of the semi-truck suffered only minor injuries.
Multiple agencies, including the East River Fire Department, Princeton Rescue Squad, and the Department of Highways, responded to assist with rescue and investigation efforts. The names of the victims have not yet been released pending family notification.
Investigation and Legal Considerations: The ongoing investigation will focus on several key legal issues, including why the car was stopped on the shoulder and whether the tractor-trailer driver was fatigued, distracted, or otherwise negligent. It will also investigate visibility, lane discipline, and adherence to rules regarding safe passing distances.
Pending the outcome of the investigation, the surviving passenger and the families of the deceased may have grounds for civil claims. Wrongful death and personal injury lawsuits may help recover medical costs, funeral expenses, and compensation for emotional loss.
I extend condolences to the families and loved ones affected by this crash.
