Two Killed in Grand Chute After Semi-Truck Collides with Passenger Van

Grand Chute, WI (March 24, 2025) – Two people tragically lost their lives after a serious collision involving a semi-truck and a passenger van in Grand Chute on Monday morning.

Accident Details:  The crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. at the intersection of W. Wisconsin Avenue and N. McCarthy Road. According to preliminary reports, the semi-truck was traveling eastbound on W. Wisconsin Avenue when it collided with a van. Both occupants of the van sustained life-threatening injuries. They were later pronounced dead at a hospital. Authorities closed the eastbound lanes of W. Wisconsin Avenue between N. McCarthy Road and N. Casaloma Drive for several hours to investigate the crash thoroughly.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators will explore whether either vehicle failed to yield the right of way at the intersection or was traveling at an unsafe speed for the conditions. Since commercial trucks require longer stopping distances and have more prominent blind spots, caution is needed when approaching intersections.

Authorities will likely examine whether the truck driver was fatigued at the time of the crash. Federal hours-of-service (HOS) regulations limit how long commercial drivers can be on the road without rest. If the driver exceeded allowable hours or skipped mandatory breaks, fatigue could have impaired reaction time or decision-making.

Additionally, mechanical failure can sometimes play a role in commercial vehicle crashes. Investigators will want to determine whether proper maintenance protocols were followed if the truck had faulty brakes, worn tires, or steering issues. Commercial trucking companies are legally required to perform routine inspections and keep records of repairs.

Investigators may analyze dash cam footage (if available), roadway skid marks, and witness statements to understand better what happened. In the case of the semi-truck, the vehicle’s electronic logging device (ELD) and onboard event data recorder (often called a “black box”) can provide valuable insight into the truck’s speed, braking, and driving behavior in the moments leading up to the crash.

If evidence reveals negligence, the families of the deceased may have grounds to pursue a wrongful death claim.

I extend my sincerest condolences to the families and loved ones of the two individuals who lost their lives in this crash. I hope the investigation brings clarity and closure.
