Two Injured in Chain Reaction Crash Involving Three 18-Wheelers on I-45 in Texas

Madisonville, TX (April 3, 2025) – Both directions of I-45 between Huntsville and Madisonville were closed for several hours on Thursday afternoon due to a chain-reaction crash involving three 18-wheelers. At least two people were injured, and the crash caused significant traffic delays across the region.

Incident Details: According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the incident began shortly after noon when the driver of a southbound 18-wheeler lost control near FM 2989. The truck struck an exit sign, crossed all southbound lanes, and jackknifed, scattering steel I-beams across the highway. That driver was transported to a local hospital with head and arm injuries.

As traffic reached a standstill, a second southbound 18-wheeler lost control, veered across the median, and collided with a northbound pickup truck. The driver of the pickup sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to a hospital for emergency care. Shortly after, a third 18-wheeler, this one carrying rebar, also crashed on the same stretch of road. All lanes of I-45 remained closed for much of the day, finally reopening around 8:30 p.m.

Authorities issued detailed detour instructions for both northbound and southbound drivers to avoid the congested area as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Investigators are expected to examine several critical factors, including driver fatigue, load security, speed, and possible brake failure or distraction.

The injured drivers may have grounds to pursue personal injury claims against the parties responsible, depending on the findings. These claims could compensate for medical costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering. Trucking companies involved in the crashes may face liability if poor maintenance, training, or safety protocols contributed to the collision.

Our thoughts are with those injured, and we hope for their full recovery.
