Tragic Wrong-Way Collision Claims Life of Miguel Reyes

Vista, CA (October 10, 2024) – On October 10, Miguel Reyes was tragically killed in a wrong-way crash on I-5, leaving his family and loved ones in deep mourning.

Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol’s Oceanside Area office, Diego Fernandez Cruz drove the wrong way on the freeway and collided with Reyes. Cruz was later arrested and now faces serious charges, including felony DUI and homicide.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that this case warrants further examination to determine liability. Driving under the influence violates the duty to drive safely, as it endangers others by impairing the driver’s ability to make sound decisions and respond to road conditions.

Civil Consequences: In addition to facing felony DUI and homicide charges, Cruz could also be subject to a wrongful death claim by Reyes’s family. Under California law, families who lose a loved one due to another person’s negligent actions have the right to seek compensation for their loss. This claim could provide financial support to cover expenses and losses resulting from the incident, though it cannot erase the profound impact on those left behind.

Community Support: In response to their tragedy, the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District (where Miguel’s wife Sarah has worked for over a decade) organized a GoFundMe campaign for the Reyes family.

I extend my heartfelt condolences to Sandra Reyes, young Mia, and all those grieving Miguel Reyes’s death.
