Discovery Bay, CA (December 6, 2024) – A crash in Discovery Bay on Friday night claimed the life of 62-year-old security guard Rene Bucaro and critically injured another guard.
Accident Details: According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a juvenile driver veered off Balfour Road near Bixler Road, crossed a divider, and collided with a security shack at The Lakes gated community. Alcohol and drugs were not involved. Bucaro died at the scene, and another guard was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The juvenile driver sustained minor injuries and was arrested for vehicular manslaughter.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Drivers owe a duty of care to operate their vehicles responsibly to prevent harm to others. In this case, the minor appears to have breached this duty by losing control of the vehicle, resulting in a fatal crash. The absence of drugs or alcohol as contributing factors raises questions about whether excessive speed, distraction, or driver inexperience played a role.
Depending on the investigation’s findings, Bucaro’s family members may be able to file a wrongful death claim for their loss, seeking compensation for funeral costs, loss of companionship, and economic support. The injured guard may be able to file a personal injury claim against the driver for medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
I extend my sincerest condolences to Rene Bucaro’s family and friends during this difficult time. I also wish the injured guard a swift recovery.
Update December 22, 2024: The injured security guard has been identified as Jamonee Andrews.
