Juan Beltran Sanchez and Evelyn David Killed in 22-Vehicle Pileup on I-40 Near Williams

Coconino County, AZ (March 14, 2024) – A devastating 22-vehicle pileup on Interstate 40 near Williams during a snowstorm claimed the lives of Juan Beltran Sanchez of Chino Valley and Evelyn David of Ganado on Thursday. The crash resulted in a massive fire that burned for 20 hours and led to the closure of westbound I-40 until Saturday afternoon.

Incident Details: According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash began when a semi-truck jackknifed, blocking all lanes of westbound I-40. Several vehicles, including other tractor-trailers, slid off the road while attempting to stop, with some crashing into or becoming trapped under semi-trucks. The collisions caused a fire so intense that it melted vehicles and pavement. A total of 36 people were involved in the accident, with 16 transported to hospitals for treatment.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: Multi-vehicle crashes in hazardous weather conditions raise complex liability issues. Investigators will assess whether drivers were traveling at safe speeds for the snowy conditions and whether proper warnings were in place. Trucking companies may also be scrutinized for driver training and vehicle maintenance. Victims and their families may have grounds for wrongful death claims if negligence contributed to the crash, such as reckless driving or inadequate road maintenance.

My deepest condolences go out to the families of Juan Beltran Sanchez and Evelyn David, as well as all those affected by this tragic accident.
