Los Angeles, CA (December 28, 2024) – Authorities have identified U.S. Military Veteran Thomas Michael Cavanaugh, 70, a U.S. military veteran, as the victim of a fatal hit-and-run that occurred in late December.
Accident Details: The collision occurred around 12:40 a.m. on December 28, when a northbound white four-door sedan driving north on Vermont Avenue struck Cavanaugh while he was walking on 165th Place. The driver fled the scene without stopping, identifying themselves, or rendering aid, as the law requires. Paramedics transported Cavanaugh to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigation: Police have not released a suspect description but noted that the vehicle was last seen heading northbound on Vermont Avenue. Detectives from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect responsible for his death. LAPD has released surveillance footage of the incident and is offering a reward of up to $50,000 for information leading to the suspect’s identification, arrest, and conviction. Anyone with information is urged to contact LAPD detectives.
Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Hit-and-run crashes can lead to serious criminal charges and civil consequences. Cavanaugh’s family may be able to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the driver if identified. Such a claim could seek compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and emotional trauma.
I extend my sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones of Thomas Michael Cavanaugh during this challenging time. I hope they get the answers and closure they need.
