Truck Driver Allegedly Fell Asleep, Killing Five in Terrell on I‑20

Terrell, TX (June 28, 2025) – Five people lost their lives in a multi‑vehicle crash on Interstate 20 in Terrell, Texas, on Saturday afternoon when a semi‑truck allegedly plowed into stopped traffic after the driver fell asleep at the wheel.

Accident Details: The victims were identified as Shaun McKellar, Zabar McKellar, their 15‑year‑old son Kason McKellar, and 79‑year‑old grandfather Billy McKellar, all from Fort Worth. An unrelated 49‑year‑old Dallas woman, Nicole Gregory, was also killed at the scene. A surviving family member, Evan McKellar (20), remains hospitalized in critical condition. The semi initially crashed into the family’s pickup, then into two more 18‑wheelers and three passenger vehicles.

Investigation and Legal Considerations: The truck driver, Alexis Osmani Gonzalez‑Companioni, 27, confessed to falling asleep before the crash. He has been arrested and charged with five counts of manslaughter and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities, including the Texas Department of Public Safety, are reviewing evidence such as driver logs and rest history. Under Texas law, victims’ families may pursue civil claims, and with criminal charges filed, this is likely to proceed to trial.

I extend my deepest condolences to the McKellar and Gregory families and hope for a full recovery for Evan.
