Teresa Garcia, 67, Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara, California  (February 6, 2026) — A Ventura woman has died from injuries sustained in a tragic traffic collision Friday evening in downtown Santa Barbara. Authorities identified the victim as Teresa Garcia, 67, who was struck by a vehicle while attempting to enter her own parked car along Anapamu Street, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.

Garcia was transported to Cottage Hospital with serious injuries following the crash and later succumbed to those injuries, police confirmed Saturday. Her death has prompted an ongoing investigation by local traffic enforcement officials.

Incident Details: According to a press release from the Santa Barbara Police Department, first responders were dispatched at approximately 5:20 p.m. on February 6 to the 100 block of West Anapamu Street following reports of a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian.

Investigators said Teresa Garcia was in the process of entering her parked vehicle when she was struck by another car traveling on Anapamu Street. Emergency personnel arrived quickly and provided medical aid before transporting Garcia to Cottage Hospital for further treatment. Despite medical efforts, she later died from her injuries.

Police closed Anapamu Street for hours while the Traffic Enforcement Unit investigated. Authorities have not released details on the vehicle’s direction or Garcia’s exact location at the time of the impact. The driver stayed at the scene, cooperated with Santa Barbara police, and was evaluated as not impaired by alcohol. No arrests have been made as the investigation is active.

Investigation: The Santa Barbara Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision. In incidents involving pedestrians entering or exiting parked vehicles, investigators typically focus on vehicle speed, lane positioning, and whether the driver had adequate opportunity to perceive and react to a person in or near the roadway.

As part of the investigation, officers are expected to examine physical evidence from the scene, including vehicle damage, point of impact, and the location of the parked vehicle relative to the travel lane. Investigators may also assess whether sightlines were obstructed, whether lighting conditions were adequate at the time of the crash, and whether traffic congestion or distractions played a role.

Because the collision happened in early evening, visibility factors like sun angle, glare, and pedestrian visibility will be reviewed. Traffic enforcement may analyze if the driver was at a suitable speed and exercising reasonable care when passing parked vehicles. Authorities haven’t said if citations are expected; the investigation is ongoing to establish what occurred.

Legal Considerations: Fatal pedestrian crashes raise legal and safety issues even without suspicion of impairment. Drivers must stay vigilant, especially in urban areas where pedestrians may enter or exit parked cars near travel lanes. Liability evaluation involves driver conduct, roadway design, traffic, and caution exercised.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the Garcia family may consider pursuing a wrongful death claim to address funeral expenses, medical costs incurred before her passing, and the emotional and financial impact of her loss.

For families, the investigative and legal process is often about more than fault. It is about understanding what happened, why it happened, and whether steps can be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

I extend my sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Teresa Garcia as they grieve this heartbreaking loss.
