Teen Kayo Amed Seriously Injured in Scooter Collision with Garbage Truck in San Bruno

San Bruno, CA (January 30, 2025) – A tragic collision left 13-year-old Kayo Amed of San Bruno with serious injuries.

Accident Details: The accident occurred near the intersection of Niles and Chestnut avenues as Kayo was riding his scooter downhill on the right side of the street. According to witnesses and police reports, Kayo collided with a Recology refuse collection truck backing up. Neighbors who witnessed the incident described the frightening moments leading up to the collision and called 911 for emergency assistance. First responders provided life-saving care at the scene before transporting Kayo to a nearby hospital. His family reports that his injuries are substantial and that he is expected to remain hospitalized for several weeks.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. California law places a duty of care on drivers of large vehicles to ensure safe operations, especially in residential neighborhoods where children may be present.

  • Mechanical Failure of the Truck: Investigators may assess whether the garbage truck was functioning correctly at the time of the accident. Faulty brakes, malfunctioning backup signals, or other mechanical issues could have impaired the driver’s ability to avoid the collision. Regular vehicle maintenance records may be reviewed as part of this analysis.
  • Driver Behavior: The driver’s actions will be carefully examined. These actions include potential factors such as inattentiveness, intoxication, fatigue, distraction, or traffic law violation.
  • Road Conditions: Road conditions at the time of the accident, including visibility, road design, and potential hazards, may also be relevant. If poor visibility or inadequate signage contributed to the collision, other parties, such as local authorities, may share responsibility.

Both the injured victim and his family may have legal options to pursue a personal injury claim to cover medical expenses, pain and suffering, and long-term care needs if negligence is found.

My thoughts are with Kayo Amed and his family during this difficult time. I hope for his full recovery.
