Ted Zuidema, 67, Dies After Motorcycle Collision in Kearny Mesa

San Diego, California  (March 13, 2026) — A 67-year-old Santee man died following a predawn motorcycle collision in the Kearny Mesa area of San Diego, according to authorities.

Officials identified the victim as Ted Zuidema of Santee.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:45 a.m. on Balboa Avenue just east of Ruffin Road.

Incident Details: According to authorities, Zuidema was riding a 2016 Triumph motorcycle westbound on Balboa Avenue when it collided with a Chevrolet pickup truck in the Kearny Mesa area. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and provided medical assistance before transporting Zuidema to Sharp Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Despite those efforts, he was pronounced dead roughly 90 minutes later as a result of injuries sustained in the crash.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the driver of the pickup truck or whether that individual was injured.

Investigation: The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation by local authorities. In motorcycle-versus-vehicle crashes, investigators typically examine right-of-way, turning movements, visibility, and timing between vehicles. Determining whether either vehicle entered the other’s path or misjudged speed and distance is often central to understanding how the crash occurred.

Crash reconstruction may include analysis of impact points, vehicle damage, roadway markings, and any available surveillance footage. Investigators may also evaluate whether lighting conditions during the early morning hours affected visibility for either the motorcyclist or the driver.

Because motorcycles are smaller and less visible than passenger vehicles, investigators often consider whether the driver of the other vehicle had a reasonable opportunity to perceive and react to the motorcycle before the collision.

At this time, authorities have not announced any citations or charges. The investigation remains ongoing.

Legal Considerations: Motorcycle collisions frequently raise complex legal questions regarding right-of-way and driver awareness.

Under California law, all motorists, including drivers of passenger vehicles, have a duty to remain attentive and share the road safely with motorcyclists. These cases often hinge on whether a driver failed to yield, turned improperly, or otherwise created a hazard.

Pending the outcome of the investigation, the Zuidema family may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim to seek compensation for funeral and burial expenses, lost wages, and loss of companionship resulting from the incident.

Beyond the legal analysis, incidents like this highlight the heightened risks motorcyclists face, particularly in urban corridors during low-light conditions.

I sincerely offer my deepest condolences to Ted Zuidema’s family and loved ones during this challenging time.
