SUV–Semi Truck Collision Near Carnes Road Killed Two People in Cold Spring

Cold Spring, WI (September 17, 2025) – Two people were killed in a devastating collision between an SUV and a semi tractor-trailer in the Town of Cold Spring.

Accident Details: Authorities reported that the crash occurred just south of Carnes Road on Highway N. Preliminary findings indicate that a northbound semi tractor-trailer veered onto the gravel shoulder. The driver then overcorrected into the southbound lane.

The SUV driver attempted to swerve to avoid a collision, but the trailer struck the vehicle on the west shoulder of the road. Responding deputies found both the driver and passenger of the SUV trapped inside. Despite rescue efforts, both were pronounced dead at the scene.

The semi-truck driver was not injured.

Investigation: The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Major Accident Investigation Team is continuing to investigate the incident. Details about the victims have not yet been released.

Crashes involving large commercial vehicles often require complex, multi-agency investigations.

In this case, investigators will likely examine skid marks, tire and brake conditions, and the truck’s maintenance records. The semi’s electronic data recorder can reveal critical information such as speed, braking, steering inputs, and hours-of-service compliance before the crash.

They may also review the driver’s logs, dispatch communications, and cell phone records to determine whether distraction, fatigue, or improper maneuvering played a role. Witness statements, traffic camera footage, and any available dashcam or surveillance video can help reconstruct the sequence of events and confirm whether the truck’s sudden swerve was due to an external hazard, driver error, or a mechanical problem.

Timely preservation of this evidence is vital in truck accident cases, as data can be lost or overwritten, and vehicles may be repaired or moved before they can be fully inspected.

Legal Considerations: From a civil law perspective, the families of the two victims may have grounds to pursue wrongful death claims. This action can be brought when someone’s negligent actions cause another person’s death. Potential defendants might include the truck driver personally and the trucking company, depending on the facts revealed by the investigation.

Compensation may include funeral and burial expenses, loss of financial support, loss of companionship, and the emotional suffering caused by the death. Evidence from the truck’s electronic data, the driver’s logs, and witness accounts will be central to proving liability.

I extend my deepest sympathies to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in this crash.
