Fiery SUV Crash Claims Lives of John Michael Ross and Emalie Marie Ortiz in Altadena

Altadena, CA (March 5, 2024) – On the early morning of Tuesday, March 5, 2024, a devastating crash occurred on 64 West Loma Alta Drive in Altadena, resulting in the deaths of John Michael Ross, 29, of Altadena, and Emalie Marie Ortiz, 23, of Alhambra.

Accident Details and Investigation: The accident happened shortly after midnight. Ross was driving an Audi with Ortiz as his passenger. The Audi collided with a parked Volvo. According to California Highway Patrol (CHP), when the officers arrived at the scene, they found the Audi overturned and engulfed in flames. Despite the swift response, both Ross and Ortiz were pronounced dead at the scene. The exact speed at which Ross was driving remains undetermined. The CHP has stated that alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in this collision.

Legal Considerations: As a personal injury attorney, I find that several aspects of this case warrant further examination. Determining the speed of the Audi at the time of the crash is crucial. Accident reconstruction experts can analyze the scene, vehicle damage, and other evidence to estimate the speed and understand the driver’s actions leading up to the collision. The Audi should also be examined for any mechanical failures or maintenance issues that could have contributed to the accident. This examination includes checking for potential defects or recalls that might have impacted vehicle performance. Lastly, the road conditions at the time of the crash, including lighting, visibility, and any potential obstructions, need to be reviewed. Depending on the outcome of the investigation, Ross and Ortiz’s families may be able to file a wrongful death claim if negligence (from parties such as the car manufacturer or city municipality in charge of maintaining the roads) was the cause of the accident.

My sincerest condolences are with the family and friends of John Michael Ross and Emalie Marie Ortiz during this tragic time.
