Oxnard, CA (April 19, 2025) – A 37-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of DUI after causing a multi-vehicle wrong-way crash on the 101 Freeway in Oxnard Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Accident Details: CHP received reports of a wrong-way driver on the northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway at 9:15 a.m. Authorities say the woman entered the freeway in the wrong direction via the Oxnard Boulevard on-ramp while driving a Chevrolet Equinox SUV. After realizing her mistake, she attempted a U-turn but was struck by an oncoming semi-truck driven by a 60-year-old man from Yuba City.
The SUV spun out of control and came to rest in the freeway median. A Ford F-150, driven by a 38-year-old woman from Ventura, slowed down to avoid the spinning vehicle and was rear-ended by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Jeep’s driver, a 33-year-old Oxnard woman, sustained moderate injuries and was taken to St. John’s Hospital. The Ford driver suffered minor injuries, while the semi-truck driver was not hurt.
The wrong-way driver declined medical aid and was taken into custody at the scene.
Legal Considerations: Wrong-way collisions involving suspected DUI drivers are taken seriously under California law and often result in both criminal charges and civil liability. If it is confirmed that impairment led to the crash, the driver could face felony DUI charges. Additionally, injured parties may have grounds to pursue personal injury claims for medical costs and damages.
Ongoing Investigation: CHP’s Ventura Area office is continuing to investigate the crash. Northbound lanes were closed for about an hour during cleanup and preliminary investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 805-662-2640.
I hope those injured in this incident recover quickly and fully.
